In a new paper published in Current Biology, we find that 4- to 11-year-old children offload cognition by marking the location of hidden memory targets. Children readily use a provided strategy and offload in line with task demands, and older children are more likely to devise their own offloading strategy. These results start to chart out how children turn objects into thinking tools.
